The practice of pouring batter on a pan and frying it is common in almost every culture around the globe. Here are five types of pancakes you can make at home.
America – Buttermilk Pancakes
Buttermilk pancakes are the most traditional pancakes. They are known to be delicious, versatile, and easy to make. The secret weapon to its signature thick and fluffy texture: baking powder. They are traditionally eaten with butter and maple syrup, but you can mix it up and add your choice of toppings.
France – Crepes
Crepes are thinner and larger than traditional pancakes. They are flipped and cooked on both sides, then folded over sweet or savory fillings like chocolate, fruit, cheeses, and sautéed vegetables.
Japan – Fluffy Pancakes

These pancakes are bouncy and a total dream come true. Japanese Pancakes, often called Souffle Pancakes, are similar in ingredients but different in composition and texture to your standard pancake recipe.
The biggest difference between them is the smaller amount of flour and that the egg whites are beaten to form a meringue (just like you would in a souffle) before being gently folded into the rest of the pancake batter. The result is a super fluffy and airy pancake.
Denmark – Aebleskiver
Aebleskivers don’t look like your typical pancakes, they are round and similar in size to a golf ball. They are often eaten for dessert; dipped in jam and sprinkled with powdered sugar. The batter is the same as traditional pancakes but cooked into a round indentation cast iron pan. As each cake firms up, it’s rotated in its indentation, cooking into a sweet, puffy, round pancake.
Finland – Pannukakku
Pannukakkus are oven-baked pancakes with a custardy, vanilla-spiked batter. They are usually eaten for breakfast or dessert topped with berries, cream, jam, and powdered sugar.
They are a combination of French toast, custard, crepes, and pancakes. It comes out of the oven as an impressive golden crater. The crispy sides rise above the edges of the pan and the center is creamy and glistening with the melted butter.
